Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni has confirmed that spaza shop owner, Mazwi Kubheka, was kidnapped.
Addressing a media briefing, Mthombeni says Kubheka was allegedly picked up by a motorist near Carnival City in Brakpan, who then took him to the police station in Vosloorus.
Kubheka went missing on April 2, 2026, while on his way to deposit the rent for his Spaza shop into a bank account.

Mthombeni says the 27-year-old’s statement is still being investigated, but information at hand indicates that he was guarded by two Malawian nationals.
“Basically, from the date of the alleged kidnapping, the victim could not account for what happened as he was blindfolded; he was only unfolded at a place where he was kept at. He indicated that it was upstairs or first floor, where he was guarded by two Malawian nationals.”
Mthombeni says information from Kubheka led them to a house in Kensington.
