Mop-up operations to start in flood hit areas of Welkom

The Free State Department of Cooperative Governance will start a mop-up operation in Phomolong and the Thandanani Informal Settlement in Welkom on Sunday, following heavy rains.

More than 500 people were evacuated to the Setshabelo Primary School after their homes were flooded.

The department’s spokesperson, Zimasa Mbewu, says some affected residents will return to their homes as the rainfall has subsided and conditions have improved.

Mbewu added that they have engaged the Departments of Human Settlements, Social Development and Health to ensure a coordinated response.

“The rainfall has subsided and we expect conditions to improve from now onwards. Most affected families may be returning to their homes, and we’ll start with mop-up operations and assess any damage to infrastructure where possible. We urge communities to be cautious, avoid flooded areas and follow guidelines. The provincial disaster management centre remains operational and committed to ensuring the safety and support of all affected communities,” says Mbewu.
