Maluleke denies political interference in his resignation from NSFAS

Former National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) interim chairperson Dr Mugwena Maluleke says his resignation has nothing to do with political interference or pressure from the executive.

Maluleke has cited personal reasons for his resignation.

His departure comes in the midst of high-level board resignations from the scheme, raising concerns over governance and stability.

The Higher Education Department insists that funding operations will continue uninterrupted.

Maluleke says focusing on academics has always been part of his plan.

“I had hoped that I could use the better part of 2026 to go back to my studies. There’s no political pressure its nothing except that I don’t want to tarnish my academic records as a leader at an international level. I will avoid talking about the board because I have left it. However, it was not my wish to have the government affected. I’m very hopeful that there’s a lot of work that’s been done and they can proceed and make sure that we don’t have instability.”
