Police in KwaZulu-Natal have warned protesters targeting undocumented foreign nationals in Durban to desist from violent activities or face arrest.
This comes after an anti-illegal immigration march turned violent on Tuesday in the CBD.
Foreign nationals were seen in videos posted online being assaulted.
Many shops owned by both South Africans and foreign nationals have closed due to fear of being attacked.
A strong police contingent has been deployed to patrol the streets.
Police Spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they are planning to meet with March and March organisers to discuss their activities.
“In the Durban CBD, we have increased the numbers. We do not want to keep so much police in the same area because we don’t want a police state. We want people to live freely and go about their business daily, and freely so, without fear of anything. But where there are threats, we are bound to capacitate as the police. We still encourage those who were threatened to come forward and open cases,” says Netshiunda.
