KZN police detain undocumented foreigners occupying RDP house in Newlands

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have detained three people found living in illegally leased RDP houses in Newlands East, north of Durban.

The foreign nationals failed to present valid documentation. In a joint operation that the provincial Human Settlements Department led, officials found that at least five RDP houses in the Quarry Heights area were being rented to Mozambican nationals.

The department says a house was also illegally built on land earmarked for a public park and rented out.

The department’s spokesperson Ndabezihle Sibiya, “Undocumented foreign nationals were actually found occupying an RDP house. We can also indicate that there was other six foreign nationals that were found with questionable passports, as well as questionable identification documents. We are very concerned about the South Africans that are renting out these RDP houses that should be occupied by South Africans.”
