JSC suspends E Cape High Court judge pending conduct tribunal

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has suspended Eastern Cape High Court Judge Belinda Hartle, following an enquiry into allegations of incapacity, gross incompetence and gross misconduct.

This follows a complaint laid by Thozamile Semekazi, an employee at the office of the Chief Justice based at KuGompo.

The JSC says that a judicial conduct tribunal was appointed to look into the allegations.

The commission concluded that Judge Hartle be suspended from office in terms of section 177(3) of the Constitution, with the condition that she is allowed to finalise her partly heard matters and reserved judgments during the period of her suspension.

The commission has further directed that the head of court in the Eastern Cape division of the High Court take reasonable measures to minimise interaction between the judge and Semekazi during the suspension period.

Judge Hartle’s suspension will endure until the complaint against her has been finalised.
