Gauteng Health apologises for delayed student nurse stipends

The Gauteng Department of Health has apologised for delays in the payment of stipends, affecting about 500 student nurses across four nursing colleges in the province.

The delays have disrupted students’ academic and clinical training, with many relying on the stipends for daily expenses, including transport.

Affected students have temporarily been released for recess while the department works to finalise the payments.

The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, says the delays were caused by administrative processes.

He says payments are expected to reflect in students’ accounts by June 4.

“Stakeholders have further agreed that upon the students’ return at the different colleges, 40 hours of academic time will be recovered over a five-week period. This will be done to compensate for outstanding clinical placement requirements and this arrangement will not affect the standard July recess to which students remain entitled to.”
