The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal is intensifying its renewal campaign in an effort to win back voters in traditional strongholds.
The party engaged supporters in Intshanga, west of Durban, as it aims to retain the eThekwini Metro in the local polls in November.

Back in his ward, Provincial Task Team Coordinator James Nxumalo led the charge to reconnect with voters. This is ahead of what is seen as a do-or-die local government election for the party in KwaZulu-Natal.
“They must go out in numbers and vote for the ANC in defence of our revolution and our gains that we’ve achieved since 1994.”
Some residents say they still believe in the ANC and will give their vote to it, despite still grappling with service delivery issues.
“Everyone has mistakes. I still love the ANC because I can see what the party has done, I have an RDP house as we speak. The ANC is working hard to unite people and we do not doubt that they will do well in the local government elections.”
Intshanga has been a flashpoint for the Tripartite Alliance, and has seen deadly clashes between ANC and South African Communist Party (SACP) members in 2016.
The presence of Nxumalo, who is also a senior SACP leader, has helped to quell tensions in the area.
The SACP’s move to contest the elections is now a new source of potential friction.
