The South African Post Office (SAPO) will stay open for another month thanks to a R150 million from National Treasury. However, its long-term survival still depends on securing billions from the fiscus.
According to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), should SAPO not receive a R3,8 billion bailout necessary to complete its business rescue plan, it may end up shutting its doors for good.
CWU National Bargaining Coordinator, Nathan Bowers, says, “In this scenario, we have a Post Office that is understaffed, communities not getting the services. So, part of the plan must be to be able to re-open those offices and also to fix those offices in areas where we can either fix or hire more spaces in offices that used to make profits.”
