Former Johannesburg Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda.
Former Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda’s party Al Jama-ah says that it knew that the charges against him were frivolous.
Party leader Ganief Hendricks says he is pleased that the matter has been put to rest. This is after fraud charges were provisionally withdrawn against Gwamanda earlier on Tuesday at the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the decision is premised on the emergence of additional complainants, which then necessitated further investigations.
Hendricks says that Gwamanda’s position in the party has not been affected by the case.
“We knew it was a frivolous case, all charges have been dropped- he’s never been charged, the matter was postponed months after months. I was quite happy that that would be the outcome – and now the matter is closed.”
“In the party, he occupies some of the most senior positions, he now has the opportunity to concentrate on his party work- and his mandate is to win the next four- by-elections in the City of Joburg.”
