Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine in Swarklip has closed temporarily after the Bierspruit recreation dam wall partially collapsed.
Mining operations at the Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine in Swarklip, Limpopo, closed after the Bierspruit recreation dam wall partially collapsed due to heavy rain.
Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine Spokesperson Hope Tyira says the dam exceeded its capacity resulting in the collapse of the dam wall.
Tyira says they decided to close the mine except for its essential services. They have informed the water authorities and communities downstream.
“What we have done is that we basically closed the area for public safety, and we are closely monitoring conditions. We also communicated with relevant government departments, particularly the National Department of Water Affairs as required by law. We also had engagements with our employees and the broader community, to keep all stakeholders informed of the developing situation. We will comprehensively assess the situation and make sure necessary maintenance work will commence soon.”
