The official unemployment rate has decreased to 31.9% in the fourth quarter of 2024.
This is due to an increase in employment and a decrease in unemployment in the same period.
According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), employment gains were observed in the formal sector, the informal sector and private households, while the agricultural sector employment decreased by 11 000 in the same period.
On a year-on-year basis, the Stats SA Quarterly Labour Force Survey shows that total employment increased by 2.1% in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The survey shows that employment has been increasing in the fourth quarter of each year since 2019, except for the decrease observed in 2023.
It also shows that on a year-on-year basis, employment gains were mainly driven by elementary occupations, craft and related trade and clerical occupations.
A loss in employment was recorded among professionals, technician and domestic worker occupations.
