Swellendam mayor Du Rand re-elected

Ousted Swellendam Mayor Francois du Rand has been re-elected to his position in the Overberg town today.

Du Rand was removed as mayor following a motion of no-confidence against him two weeks ago, spearheaded by former Speaker and Freedom Front Plus (FF+) member Juan van Schalkwyk.

Van Schalkwyk has since resigned from Council.

Jasper du Toit, also from the FF+, was elected as the new Speaker.

DA Western Cape leader Tertuis Simmers, “The DA Western Cape welcomes the re-election of Swellendam Mayor Francois du Rand during a Special Council meeting today. Van Schalkwyk’s resignation left the Speaker position vacant and Jasper du Toit Laubsher of the FF+ was elected as the new Swellendam Council Speaker. With this matter now behind us, the DA can focus on serving the residents without further disruptions.”
