An illegal connection in a building.
Energy expert Professor Sampson Mamphweli has warned that if people continue with illegal electricity connections, it poses a threat to the already overstretched power grid.
In the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country’s energy supply is on a positive trajectory despite load shedding being re-introduced for two days last week.

Professor Mamphweli says that funding from different sectors will enable Eskom to invest in proper infrastructure that will sustain electricity supply for years to come.
“That will unlock a lot of great capacity and new generation capacity because we need those lights for us to be able to transmit the electricity from the place where we are producing electricity to the producers. From the time we started implementing the energy action plan, we were sitting at close to fifty percent energy availability factors through the implementation of the action plan to improve statically to sixty percent.”
On Friday last week, the country was surprised by Eskom announcing the implementation of Stage 3 load shedding.
Minister of Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, said it was sad that Eskom had to implement load shedding again after 10 months.
