Minerals Council South Africa has launched a National Day of Safety and Health in mining.
The Minerals Council of South Africa says there has been a steady decline in mining fatalities over the past few years. The Council says about 40 deaths were recorded in the sector last year, compared to more than 50 a few years ago.
The Council’s CEO Mzila Mthenjane says improved safety standards are helping to bring down the number of fatalities.
Speaking at the Investing in African Mining Indaba, in Cape Town, Mthenjane says, “I think the first and most important was how the industry performed from a health and safety perspective. Where we’ve seen the continued trajectory of a downward movement in terms of fatalities. We achieved a record of 42 fatalities compared to previous years which is better than the previous record of 49 and much better than the previous year of 55 fatalities.”
