Police surround a cage that was lowered underground to retrieve illegal miners in Stilfontein, North West.
The South African Police Service has urged the public not jump to conclusions and speculate on the whereabouts of alleged illegal mining kingpin, James Neo Tshoaeli also known as Tiger.
The police were reacting to allegations that he has died.
Four police officers have been arrested for allegedly assisting Tshoaeli to escape.
VIDEO | North West Acting Police Commissioner Patrick Asaneng says the premise of the investigation into Tiger’s disappearance was on the believe that he could have only escaped through the assistance of police.
Tshoaeli resurfaced from Shaft 11 in Stilfontein on 15 January but never made it to police holding cells.
“Let’s not jump to conclusions and speculate. Let’s allow the investigation to tell us what exactly happened. Our focus now is where is Tiger, wherever he was taken to, he must be found. With our own arrested, we are hopeful we will get to the truth of what really happened. General Fannie Masemola is thus far satisfied with how investigations are unfolding. This matter is before court and no further comment will be provided at this stage,” says National Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
