Cabinet Lekgotla 2024.
Job creation, sustainable energy, reviving the economy, and the recent killing of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are set to top the agenda at the first Cabinet Lekgotla of the year, starting in Pretoria this afternoon.
The two-day meeting comes amid rising tensions among some Government of National Unity (GNU) partners over several Bills enacted by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
At least 10 GNU parties will meet at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House to outline the government’s main priorities for 2025. As they convene, GNU partners will need to set aside their differences over contentious issues such as the NHI, BELA Act, and the recently signed Expropriation Act.
The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) has lobbied other parties to challenge the constitutionality of the Expropriation Act in the Constitutional Court while the Democratic Alliance (DA) has lodged a formal dispute within the GNU.
President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized that the African National Congress (ANC) focus at the Lekgotla is on improving the lives of South Africans.
The meeting’s outcomes will shape the State of the Nation Address scheduled for next month.
