Nehawu to petition Treasury, SARB over Ithala Bank’s liquidation

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) is today expected to submit a memorandum of demands to the National Treasury and South African Reserve Bank (SARB) in a bid to prevent the impending liquidation of Ithala Bank.

According to Nehawu, the bank’s more than 400 workers will be negatively impacted should the Prudential Authority’s application succeed.

The Union’s Durban Regional Secretary, Prince Mthalane, says they will also be going to court on an urgent basis to ensure that workers are paid their salaries.

“Our primary concern is more than 400 workers that are employed by the institution, Ithala Bank. As things stand now, none of them have been paid. Their salaries were supposed to be paid on the 20th of January. They still have not been paid. They’ve just been left in the dark.”

Mthalane adds: “So our view is that the manner in which this was done, was done in a very hasty manner which is now affecting hundreds of workers who have to feed their families, but now they have not received their salaries because all transactions that the organization would have done have been frozen.”
