MK Party leader Jacob Zuma (C) before addressing party members
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is adamant that it will take the reins in KwaZulu-Natal in the coming months. Despite the party securing the greatest number of votes in KwaZulu-Natal in last year’s general elections, it failed to secure an outright majority.
This forced it to become the official opposition when the IFP, the ANC, the DA and the NFP formed a government of provincial unity.
Party leader Jacob Zuma addressed members in Durban.
“Some people said we would only last a month…but here we are, we are here to stay.”
Zuma has reassured party leaders that MK is still going strong.
That is despite the party having faced a myriad of challenges since its formation in December 2023, from factionalism and the jostling for positions, to allegations of fraud and corruption against some leaders.
The party also made a number of changes to its leadership and its representatives in Parliament and legislatures. Party leaders say they’ve dealt with some of the challenges.
This has enabled them to appoint a new leadership structure in KZN, the party’s biggest support base.
Former premier and ANC stalwart Willies Mchunu will lead the province as convenor. While Simphiwe Mpungose returns as the provincial organizer.
The party also appointed regional leaders.
Mchunu says they are now gunning for control of KwaZulu-Natal.
“Plans are afoot to take over control of KZN.”
The party says it plans to forge ahead with its application to the Electoral Court to have the results of last year’s national and provincial elections set aside.
