Mining production decreased by an annual 0.9% in November

The mining sector in South Africa is showing signs of strain, with production declining by 0.9% year-on-year in November. This comes after a 1.1% year-on-year increase recorded in the previous month.

The largest negative contributors were gold, iron ore, coal and diamonds, while Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) and chromium ore were the largest positive contributors.

On a month-on-month basis, Stats SA data shows the sector recorded a better decrease compared to the previous month.

Stats SA data shows seasonally adjusted mining production in the three months that ended November, increased by 4%.

The largest positive contributors were PGMs, iron ore, and coal.

However, the sector has been battling low commodity prices and logistics challenges that have negatively impacted business activity. This is despite the absence of load shedding for several months now.
