NW residents advised to focus on exploring other avenues for survival

The WesVaal Chamber of Business in Klerksdorp in the North West has advised local residents to focus on exploring other avenues for survival rather than illegal mining.

This comes after some residents called on government to make the formalisation of artisanal mining its priority.

Seventy-eight bodies of illegal miners have been retrieved from a disused mine in Stilfontein in the province.

Over 1500 other illegal miners have been brought to the surface and arrested.

The chamber’s president Kgotso Mmadi says there are many opportunities in various industries.

“There are opportunities out there that we can establish – manufacturing, recycling and energy renewal. Those are the opportunities that we can look at and I believe that entrepreneurs will identify a problem and find a solution.”

“There are entrepreneurs that we need to unearth and this creates an opportunity for us to unearth such and we believe that if they are appearing, we are going to elevate them and we believe that government will be there to support such initiatives,” says Mmadi.
