Public sector labour unions are seeking a fresh mandate from the members after the government tabled a revised wage offer of 5%, up from the previous offer of 4.7% at the Public Sector Coordinating Bargaining Council.

The Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement tabled last year made a provision for a 4.7% salary increase for public servants.

The workers’ demands have been revised down several times from an initial 12,6%.

“We really have come all the way down, you know from 12% and now from 7,5 to 6% , you know. That’s a percentage and a half, while the employers only moved from the 4,7% to 5%, which is only 0,3%. So, we believe that, you know, the employer should really consider, moving up and at least meeting us at a 6% because we believe 6% is reasonable,” says the Public Servant’s Association’s Joseph Mashigo.

He has added that the servants’ net income has been affected by other expenses.

“And of course, I mean, this is informed by a number of things, you know, especially now because we are aware of the medical aid for public servants that has gone up by 13% and that has seriously impacted our members, and it has really, affected their net income,” he says/
