Local government should prioritised: Ramaphosa

African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says they will prioritise fixing local government for the people of South Africa.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha where the party delivered its January 8 statement.

His comments come at a time where municipalities across the currently are struggling to deliver basic services to residents.

Ramaphosa says local government has not been functioning as it should.

“Our second priority, comrades, is fixing local government and ensuring that local government works well. As we look throughout the country, we find that the most important area of government, which is local government, has not been functioning as well as it should. The National Executive Committee has decided that we need to focus on fixing local government,” says Ramaphosa.

Renewal

The party has repeated its calls for the party’s renewal, saying that the NEC seeks to make the party more effective in achieving its objectives.

This follows its loss of an absolute majority in last year’s polls, which saw the party form a coalition government with the DA and other smaller parties, to constitute the Government of National Unity (GNU).

“The ANC will renew, and rebuild itself, to unite all South Africans, and to provide clear, decisive and ethical leadership. It is through all this, that the National Executive Committee now, therefore, declares that 2025, will be a year of renewal, to make the ANC a more effective instrument of the people, to achieve the vision of the Freedom Charter,” says Ramaphosa.
