Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has confirmed that he has disbanded the police task team set up to investigate suspected political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
He says it is no longer necessary because it’s not adding value to policing in the province.
The task team was established following the recommendations of the Moerane Commission of Inquiry.
Mchunu has also instructed National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola to halt all processes to fill positions in Crime Intelligence nationally and provincially.
On Thursday, the South African Police Service reported that it coughs up nearly R4 million a year for 40 suspended officers who received their full salaries. This came out in a written Parliamentary answer.

The suspended officers face charges ranging from corruption to kidnapping, sexual harassment and murder.
Some of the men and women in blue stand accused of being on the wrong side of the law. And the crimes they are accused of, are serious.
Mchunu, said some of the most senior officers stand accused of serious crimes such as theft, sexual harassment, murder, extortion and assault.
