African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) in commemorating the 30th anniversary of the passing of the party’s former General Secretary and National Chair, Joe Slovo in Soweto.

The ANC says its participation in today’s commemoration is to serve as a moment to reflect on Slovo’s revolutionary ideals and the shared mission to advance the National Democratic Revolution.

The two alliance partners are set to hold a bilateral later this month on the matter including the over 22-year-old alliance reconfiguration debate.

Ramaphosa says Slovo was firm in strategy and action.

“The mission to which he dedicated his life is not yet complete, that we must concede, it is however our shared responsibility as the liberation movement but more particularly as the alliance as well as the broader democratic movement and also as people of South Africa to complete the work that Joe Slovo started and left unfinished. It is our responsibility as the alliance to pick up the spear where it has fallen. “
