Eskom has successfully synchronised Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in Cape Town to the national grid.
This follows a maintenance programme which will increase the unit’s lifespan by 20 years.
The power utility says in a statement that the unit will contribute 930 megawatts to the national grid and will in turn increase its capacity by 2500 megawatts by March 2025.
Eskom Spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says, “The maintenance programme for Unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, comprehensive inspections, and refuelling activities to ensure the reactor’s continued safe and efficient performance. These enhancements align with Eskom’s broader strategy to secure the future of Koeberg’s reactors, which are critical to the country’s energy security.”
