The latest Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) shows that total employment in the formal sector declined by 133 000 jobs or 1.2% in the third quarter – July to September of this year compared to the second quarter.
Full-time employment decreased by 0,5% compared to the third quarter in 2023, whilst part-time employment decreased by 17,8%.
The infographic below shows the sectors that have grown and declined in the third quarter of 2024.
The community sector— which consists of education, health and social work, sports and the arts, etc — is the largest sector and employs the most people in the third quarter of this year. The electricity sector employs the lowest number of people.
