Sanco to march over illegal mining, unregulated spaza shops

South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) will lead a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria today to urge government to address issues such as illegal mining and undocumented migrants.

Sanco is also concerned about unregulated tuck shops also known as spaza shops, some of which have been accused of selling expired and contaminated food.

The organisation’s National Spokesperson, Donovan Williams says, “ We haven’t had the assertiveness by government to put together programmes that are not about attracting investment but rather investing in the people of South Africa.”

Williams says, “There’s been no change and no imagination from government on the side of what is to be done. We do not see that urgency. On the illegal mining, we also want the involvement of the Chamber of Mines, not just government. Yes, we want the SAPS to be assertive on the matter but we think the members of the Chamber of Mines, the mine owners are getting off scot-free.”
