RFA calls on Ramaphosa to mediate peaceful resolution in Mozambique

1 minute

The Road Freight Association (RFA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to try to mediate a peaceful resolution in Mozambique.

This following the closure of the Lebombo port of entry in Mpumalanga between South Africa and Mozambique, due to the election-related unrests in the neighbouring country.

RFA CEO Gavin Kelly says the situation in Mozambique is costing the South African economy approximately R10 million daily.

“First thing is to resolve the differences through a peaceful process that can be done through negotiations. There obviously [has to be] representatives of the unhappy parties and the representative governance [government], so we could follow a [mediated] process like we had in South Africa.”

“We’ve got a government of national unity (GNU) and without prescribing to them to say sit down … you guys have this discussion, but allow the citizens to continue with their daily work and allow businesses to continue. Otherwise, we’re going to have problems not only in Mozambique but in South Africa as well,” explains Kelly.
