South African Airways pilots suspend strike

The South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA) and National Transport Movement have suspended their strike pending further negotiations.

This comes after reaching a conditional agreement with SAA management this morning.

Pilots will return to work while negotiations for improved working conditions continue between the unions and SAA management.

The airline says it was able to operate 51% of its planned flights during the strike.

The SABC News understands that the parties agreed on a wage settlement of 9.4%. However, the negotiations are still ongoing on other outstanding issues.

SAA pilots affiliated to SAAPA and the National Transport Movement Pilots Forum downed tools on Thursday demanding a 15% wage increase along with other benefits while the employer was offering 8%.

The strike affected SAA operations with passengers experiencing long delays at the OR Tambo international airport.
