Steenhuisen says citizens should not accept dry taps

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged citizens not to accept dry taps as the new normal in the country.

The party today held a briefing outside the South Hills Water Tower, south of Johannesburg, an area which has been affected by recurring and lengthy water outages for several years.

The party says that the country faces an escalating crisis of reduced clean water supply resulting from poor infrastructure maintenance, corruption and the collapse of municipalities.

DA leader John Steenhuisen says it is only in the DA run municipalities where citizens receive proper water services and has urged people to use the 2026 elections to bring this reality to their communities.

The DA has also called for collaboration amongst all levels of government and large industries to fix the dire water situation in parts of the country.

“So we have a plan to involve private companies in water infrastructure projects to overcome the funding hurdle towards developing water sensitive cities and to optimize storm water and urban water waste for proof flood control and water reuse. As a part of a project to develop water-wise citizens, we have to change our relationship with water in South Africa. We must be one of the only remaining countries in the world that flushes clean drinking water down into sewage systems and we need to consider a dedicated ringfenced grant for water infrastructure maintenance.”
