The Gauteng leg of public hearings by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has seen strong opposition to the proposed 36% Eskom tariff hike.

The power utility has applied for a 36% increase for the 2025/2026 financial year.

It is also requesting 11 and 9% increases for the two following years.

Nersa has been going around the country seeking comments on the power utility’s application with an announcement expected before the end of this month.

Nersa’s Chairperson on Electricity Nomfundo Maseti says the process wraps up in Durban this weekend.

“We have had a lot of community participants, some of them are from organized community forums or organizations, but some of them are individuals and really they are raising issues of affordability as well as issues of service quality in terms of the infrastructure and of the municipalities, as well as Eskom in terms of servicing communities. And I think the critical issue is the fact that people are complaining that they are not working and therefore, they are forced now to choose between buying food or buying electricity so they are appealing to the regulator that we take those concerns into consideration,” says Maseti.
