Several municipalities across the country conducted by-elections yesterday, with the ANC winning most of the contested wards.

The Thabazimbi Local Municipality also held their by-elections to elect a new local council, but council remains hung as the African National Congress (ANC) dropped to 39.65% of the vote share (10 seats), from 47.4% (11 seats) in 2021. The Democratic Alliance (DA) received 16.21% of the vote, a slight increase of 1-percentage point, to retain 4 PR seats.

Thabazimbi is the second municipality to be dissolved since the 2021 Local Government Elections, after Ditsobotla in the North West.

In the Eastern Cape, the ANC retained Ward 31 in Enoch Mgijima and Ward 11 (87%) in Port St. Johns municipalities. In KwaZulu-Natal, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained Ward 16 (53%) in Mtubatuba Municipality.

In North West, the DA won Ward 5 (41%) in Maquassi Hills Municipality from the ANC. In the Western Cape, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) won Ward 9 (49%) from the ANC

In the Northern Cape, the ANC won Ward 1 (62%) the Karoo Hoogland Municipality from the DA, making the ANC the majority party taking control of the municipality away from the DA-led coalition.
