Eskom saves over R16 billion in diesel spending

1 minute

Eskom says it has saved more than R16 billion in diesel compared to last year.

The power utility’s top brass, including the board, appeared before Parliament’s Electricity and Energy Committee to among others, discuss its performance and finances for the 2024/25 financial year.

Eskom CEO Dan Marokane says their performance has taken an upswing, with savings to show.

“Our financial and operational performance has improved. Eight months of no load shedding comes at back of serious improvement in generation recovery plan execution and savings in diesel costs when compared to last year.”

Eskom Board Chairperson Mteto Nyati says suggestions that the eight months of no load shedding is due to burning diesel, is not true.

“As many people [were] saying in past, oh you’re probably burning diesel. What we can say [is], we have saved R16 billion in diesel. We had done this without burning diesel, which shows of the health of the fleet that we have in generation,” explains Nyati.
