Build One South Africa (BOSA) is on a bid to publicise the National Register of Sexual Offenders (NRSO) in an effort to combat incidents of physical and sexual abuse against women and children.
The party launched its nationwide petition in August and has so far reached over 12 000 signatures.
BOSA says the current protocol to access the register is a time-consuming process that requires paying a fee of R150 and a minimum waiting period of six weeks.
BOSA deputy leader, Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster says, “Nine out of ten of those who are prosecuted are actually repeat offenders. So, we have what is called recidivism in this country, where we have offenders that repeat. If you have a register that is open to the public, it could reduce the number of repeat offences.
For example, I’m somebody who has children and if I were to employ somebody in my home. I have no access, no direct and easily accessible information as to whether this person has ever been convicted of a sexual offence,” she adds.
