A by-election will be held today at Ward 9 in Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, which includes parts of Dysselsdorp, Schoemanshoek and other outlying areas.
The by-election follows Patriotic Alliance (PA) councillor, Bertram Jantjies, joining the Democratic Alliance (DA).
This is the second by-election in the ward this year.
The four candidates are Johanna Olivier of the African National Congress (ANC), Bertram Jantjies of the DA, Flerencia Abrahams from the PA and Hendrik Botha from the Greater Oudtshoorn Civic Association.
Mayor under Government of Local Unity
The Oudtshoorn council in the Little Karoo elected a new mayor in August as part of their new Government of Local Unity.
This came after the surprise decision of the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) in supporting the ANC in a motion of no confidence against former DA mayor, Chris Macpherson.
The DA says this action not only broke their existing coalition agreements with the FF Plus, but also handed the Oudtshoorn Municipality back to the ANC.
