The Tshiamiso Trust has called on former gold mineworkers and their families to verify their eligibility for compensation due to permanent lung damage from silicosis or work-related tuberculosis (TB).
The trust manages claims for workers who contracted TB or silicosis while performing high-risk jobs in specific gold mines between March 1965 and December 2019.
Tshiamiso Trust CEO Dr. Munyadziwa Kwinda expressed concern about the low number of claims received.
“Not only concerned, but it is also part of our processes to always call upon potential claimants and also those that already lodged the claims, but they’ve changed their contact details to update their contact details with us,” said Kwinda.
He added: “It is an ongoing process and this is informed by the fact that we need to ensure that by the time the trust closes, in 2031, at least we have reached as many potential claimants as reasonably possible.”
