The Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape has urged residents in low-lying areas along the Gamtoos River to evacuate immediately as there is a high risk of flooding in the area.
The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a level 8 warning of disruptive rain leading to flooding in the area.
Earlier last month, about 40 residents had to be rescued in one of the areas as they were trapped in their flooded houses.
Kouga Municipality Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, says they are taking precautionary measures to avoid loss of life.
“Because of rising water levels in the Gamtoos River, we are asking residents in low-lying areas to evacuate immediately. This is precautionary to make sure that our residents are safe, as we do not want any loss of life. It is critical that residents evacuate immediately from low-lying areas along the Gamtoos River.”
