Mandela Bay EMS on high alert amid disruptive rainfall warning

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the Eastern Cape says emergency services are on high alert to guard against any eventuality as more destructive rains are forecast for the area.

A level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall, effective from Wednesday, has been issued by the South African Weather Services (SAWS) in the city and surrounding areas.

Municipal Spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya says the downpours are likely to cause widespread flooding, leading to dangerous travel conditions, infrastructure damage and potential disruptions to communities.

Soyaya says, “Nelson Mandela Municipality is urging residents to take immediate precautionary measures following the SAWS of the weather warning upgrade from level 5 to 8 of disruptive rainfall.”

He says, “Our disaster management centre, emergency services and technical teams have been placed on high alert, and are actively monitoring the situation. Residents are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers, streams and flooded roads, and follow municipal and weather services updates.”
