Matipandile Sotheni appears at the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court in the East Rand on March 25, 2026.
The Brakpan Magistrate’s Court has denied former South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force (STF) officer Matipandile Sotheni bail.
Sotheni is accused of killing Marius van der Merwe, also known as Witness D at the Madlanga Commission.
During his previous court appearance, Sotheni denied any involvement in Van der Merwe’s murder and told the court through his legal team that he intends to stand trial to prove his innocence.
Sotheni faces 16 charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, murder and attempted murder.
The court says the state had a strong case against the accused.
