ATM Parliamentary leader Vuyo Zungula.
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) says it plans to engage with opposition parties to encourage them to elect a chairperson for the Impeachment Committee who is not an African National Congress (ANC) member.
The committee is scheduled to have its first meeting on Monday, where representatives from various political parties will elect a chairperson.
The party asserts that for the investigation to be fair and successful, the chairperson should be someone neutral.
ATM Parliamentary Leader Vuyo Zungula says it would be in the public’s best interest for the committee to be chaired by an impartial person.
“Let’s avoid a case of the other committees whereby they are chaired by the ANC, and the ANC wants to protect their leader. Let’s put our differences and our egos aside and really put the interests of the country first by putting a chairperson that will be neutral. Someone who’s going to be advancing the work of Parliament because it can’t be that each and every term Parliament will always be in the courts and will be found by the Constitutional Court to have failed.”
