South Africa marks UN Peacekeepers Day in Bloemfontein

Families of fallen soldiers, military veterans, dignitaries, and members of the South African National Defence Force have gathered at De Brug in Bloemfontein, Free State, to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The day is observed annually on 29 May and honours peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving in missions aimed at restoring peace and stability in conflict zones.

The SANDF says the commemoration also recognises those currently deployed in UN peacekeeping operations.

The programme includes a wreath-laying ceremony.

SANDF Chief Chaplain Hlomane Moukangwe says families of fallen soldiers arrived ahead of the commemorations for counselling and debriefing sessions to help them prepare for the emotional nature of the proceedings.
