uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) Chief Whip, Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, has been granted bail of R30 000 after appearing before the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
Mokoena-Zondi was arrested in the early hours of this morning on allegations of fraud.
It is alleged that she defrauded party researchers, demanding up to 60% of their salaries.
She will be back in the Bellville Commercial Court in Cape Town on the 18th of June.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Eric Ntabazalila explains the conditions of her bail.
“She received bail of R30 000 with conditions that she must not be in contact with witnesses directly or indirectly. She must inform the investigating officer if she changes her address or contact details. She must hand over her passport to the investigating officer within 24 hours of the decision of the court and must not be arrested of any criminal offence during the period of this case.”
Her lawyer, Sibusiso Sankqela, has expressed satisfaction with the bail application.
Sankqela describes Mokoena-Zondi as a good bail candidate who is not a threat to society.
“Today we were engulfed in the bail application of my client as you rightly state. Frankly, what I can express at this stage is that she is a good bail candidate which is what we were vigour to put forth to the court and the court seemed to agree with us today thankfully. She is not a menace to society at least as it is borne out by the evidence. She has a single previous conviction but the circumstances there are touch more intricate and I would like to express here that we will deal with that at the opportune time.”
