National Assembly (NA) House Chairperson Cedrick Frolick has cautioned Members of Parliament to guard against spreading sentiments of xenophobia and anti-migration.
Frolick was speaking at the debate of Parliament’s Budget Vote for the 2026/27 financial year on Thursday.
The country has seen growing public protests and conflict between South Africans and undocumented foreign nationals.
Frolick says Parliament must be concerned about the rise in incidents of conflict across the country.
He says, “Very often we hear debates in and outside Parliament that border on incitement against other Africans. We must be very careful of how we articulate our views in Parliament.”
ILLEGAL MIGRATION
uMkhonto weSizwe MP Des van Rooyen says his party is concerned that laws around illegal migration have not been applied, leading to communities taking the law into their own hands.
Van Rooyen says it is due to the failure of the state that communities are protesting.
He says, “This country has countless laws to address illegal migration, but not enforced, hence shocking numbers of illegal migrants as a result, as government failure to enforce laws leaves hopeless communities taking the law into their own hands to enforce these laws.”
