DA wants criminal probe against Sisisi Tolashe to continue

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says a criminal investigation against former Social Development Minister, Sisisi Tolashe, must go ahead.

This is as the African National Congress (ANC) has instructed Tolashe to resign as Member of Parliament.

Nearly two weeks ago, Tolashe was fired from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet.

She has come under fire for allegedly misleading Parliament about the controversial vehicles she received from the Chinese Embassy on behalf of the ANC Women’s League, as well as revelations about alleged irregular appointments and contract extensions in her department.

Both ActionSA and the DA had laid complaints against Tolashe at Parliament’s Ethics Committee as well as criminal charges at the police station.

DA MP, Nazley Sharif, says Tolashe must still be held accountable via a criminal investigation.

“It is important to note that if Minister Tolashe resigns as an MP, Parliamentary ethics processes would likely fall away because Parliament no longer has jurisdiction over non-members, and perhaps this is another reason why they’re forcing her to resign. However, the criminal charges we have laid will continue, and accountability cannot simply disappear because she resigns.”
