GP Traffic Police warn taxi patrol groups over alleged harassment

The Gauteng Traffic Police has raised concern about incidents involving taxi patrolling groups allegedly stopping, threatening and harassing motorists on roads across the province.

The warning follows reports that motorists are allegedly being stopped by taxi monitoring groups over suspicions that they are transporting passengers illegally.

Authorities say in some cases motorists are allegedly forced to pay money before their vehicles are released.

Traffic officials have reminded taxi operators that only law enforcement officers are legally authorised to stop and inspect vehicles.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane says taxi operators should report suspected unlawful activities through the proper legal channels.

“Taxi operators are urged to report suspected unlawful activities to law enforcement authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands. Members of the public are permitted to transport passengers in accordance with the law and should not be subjected to threats, intimidation or harassment by any individual or group.”
