Police union, POPCRU says it expects the quarterly crime statistics that will be released later Friday to paint a concerning picture, especially regarding violent crime.
The union says it’s concerned about murders, gender-based violence and police killings.
The South African Police Service’s third-quarter crime statistics covering the period from October to December 2025 showed an 8.7 percent decrease in murders compared to the same period in the previous year.
There was also a 6.7 percent drop in total violent contact crime.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia will present the latest crime statistics in Pretoria.
Richard Mamabolo is POPCRU’s national spokesperson, “So, while we hope to see improvements in certain categories, our concern is that crime remains a concern to socio economic challenges including unemployment, poverty and substance abuse and the capacity constraints facing law enforcements agencies. We will be looking closely at trends and what they tell us about the effectiveness of current interventions. Importantly the statistics must be accompanied by practical plans to strengthen policing, detective services, intelligence capacities and of course overall resources for frontline officers.”
