Judge to consult Chief Justice over Meyiwa trial interpreter concerns

Proceedings in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the High Court in Pretoria have been adjourned until Friday after the five accused raised concerns about the court interpreter.

The accused allege that the interpreter loses his temper with witnesses and has requested that he be removed from the proceedings.

The issue emerged during testimony by retired senior South African Police Service Commander, General Vincent Leshabane.

Leshabane testified that Constable Sizwe Zungu’s evidence had misled the court.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng adjourned proceedings to seek guidance from the Chief Justice.

“So, what I’ve decided to do is that I’ll go and see the Chief Justice. This has never happened in South Africa. Never. I’ve checked, where litigants are unhappy about the conduct of a fellow employee, who, in my view, has not contravened any law. He’s got human rights. We know our situation regarding labour law. He’s got rights, also, and he’s a member of a union. So, I think the best person to resolve this issue is the Chief Justice.”
