Electricity pylons
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) will kick off its public hearings in Cape Town today before heading to other provinces.
Eskom has applied to Nersa for a 36% electricity tariff hike from April next year.
Residents have expressed anger and frustration over Eskom’s application.
Nersa’s public hearings are scheduled to end on the fourth of next month in all nine provinces.
Eskom had asked for a 36% increase in electricity tariffs for the 2025 financial year.
This would be followed by 12% for the 2026/27 financial year and an increase of 9% for 2027/2028.
If approved, the price hike would have allowed Eskom to collect R446 billion in revenue in 2026, R495 billion in 2027, and R537 billion in 2028.
