Former President Jacob Zuma has instructed his legal team to apply for leave to appeal Judge Nkosinathi Chili’s ruling in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday to grant the state’s so-called Stop Stalingrad application.
Judge Chili said it is in the interest of justice that the arms deal corruption trial commences regardless of any applications or pending appeals.
VIDEO | Judge Chilli’s judgement:
Zuma and French arms company Thales have pleaded not guilty to the charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering.
The case has been delayed for 18 years due to several unsuccessful applications by Zuma.
The JG Zuma Foundation says in a statement the substantive and procedural rights of an accused cannot be erased willy-nilly by a single judge.
